In other words, waking up in the middle of the night within a specific hour window consistently can mean that your body is trying to secretly tell you something, just by the very fact that you wake up at this time each night.

The Chinese Body Clock, also known as the Meridian Clock or Organ Clock, is a concept in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that associates specific times of day with the body’s internal organs. According to TCM, each organ has a two-hour window of time during which it is most active and functions at its best. Understanding the Chinese Body Clock can provide insights into how to improve one’s overall health and well-being.

The concept of the Chinese Body Clock is based on the belief that the body’s internal organs are interconnected and interdependent. Each organ has its own vital energy, or “qi,” that flows through the body’s meridians, which are pathways that run throughout the body. The meridians correspond to specific organs and functions and are said to be responsible for the flow of qi, which keeps the body healthy.

The Chinese Body Clock divides the day into twelve two-hour periods, with each period corresponding to a different organ or function.

Here is a breakdown of the Chinese Body Clock and what it can tell us about our organs:

1:00 a.m. – 3:00 a.m.: Liver meridian: The liver has over 500 biological functions in the body including but not limited to metabolism, hormonal regulation, purification of the blood and so much more. It helps to metabolize both fats and proteins.

3:00 a.m. – 5:00 a.m.: Lung meridian: The Lung meridian is associated with the lungs and the emotion of grief. During this time, the body is said to be detoxifying and replenishing qi.

5:00 a.m. – 7:00 a.m.: Large Intestine meridian: The Large Intestine meridian is associated with the large intestine and the emotion of letting go. This is a good time for elimination and cleansing the body.

7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.: Stomach meridian: The Stomach meridian is associated with the stomach and the emotion of worry. This is a good time for breakfast and for taking in nourishment.

9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.: Spleen meridian: The Spleen meridian is associated with the spleen and the emotion of overthinking. This is a good time for mental work and digestion.

11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Heart meridian: The Heart meridian is associated with the heart and the emotion of joy. This is a good time for lunch and for connecting with others.

1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.: Small Intestine meridian: The Small Intestine meridian is associated with the small intestine and the emotion of separation. This is a good time for digestion and assimilation.

3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Bladder meridian: The Bladder meridian is associated with the bladder and the emotion of fear. This is a good time for physical activity and for drinking water.

5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.: Kidney meridian: The Kidney meridian is associated with the kidneys and the emotion of willpower. This is a good time for dinner and for rest.

7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.: Pericardium meridian: The Pericardium meridian is associated with the pericardium and the emotion of passion. This is a good time for relaxation and for enjoying leisure activities.

The Chinese Body Clock & When You Wake Up – What You Need To Know

What you need to know is that if you wake up between a certain window consistently it reveals that your body is having a difficult time with that particular meridian or organ. This means that you want to support it nutritionally, with the right minerals and vitamins, antioxidants and foods. You may also have some emotional distress occurring that is effecting that organ also. The liver is the organ of anger, the kidneys are the emotion of fear, the lungs hold the emotion of grief, and so on. If you have emotions buried within you in these ways the body will store them in these specific organs.

Your health in these specific areas is compromised especially if it happens over and over. If you wake up during the ‘liver window’ multiple times weekly you need to address your liver health. If you wake up during your lung health window, you need to address your lung health, and so on and so forth. This is a revealing sign that these areas of the body, health and biology are compromised. If it continues to happen you need to spend more time and energy supporting these areas of the body which can be done nutritionally and by eating foods that support these areas of the body.

The risk of specific health and wellness ailments and possibly even diseases is higher if you do not address the health of these organs and portions of the body. Spend time nurturing these specific areas of the body, and if you’re looking for support you can contact me on instagram @healthywildfree for customized support for your health and wellness journey.

If you’ve had trouble sleeping through the night for years and you wake up all the time at different times it may not be a sign that a particular organ or system of your body is suffering but rather the balance of your sleep cycles are off. Your circadian rhythm is your internal biological clock and if this is off, it needs to be put back on track.
