Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for our health and wellbeing, but did you know that the mattress you sleep on could be making you sick? Many mattresses contain toxic chemicals that can be harmful to your health. According to a recent report, the average mattress contains more toxic chemicals than a 50-gallon drum of oil, including formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene.

In the 1950s, mattresses were made from natural materials like cotton batting. However, today’s mattresses are mostly made from petroleum-based materials. These materials have been linked to a weakened immune system and nervous system.

One of the biggest culprits in toxic mattresses is flame retardants. Most mattress companies use volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to make their products flame-resistant. These VOCs include polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and Firemaster 550. These chemicals can off-gas harmful VOCs that can cause headaches, difficulty breathing, and dizziness. Some VOCs are even known or suspected carcinogens.

Additionally, traditional mattresses contain polyurethane foam, which is made from petroleum. Companies also use glues to hold different layers together and keep fabrics in place. Solvent-based adhesives can contain up to 48 different toxic chemicals, which have been linked to cancer, organ damage, and endocrine disruption.

Fortunately, there are alternatives to traditional mattresses. Organic mattresses are made without toxic chemicals and with high-quality, natural ingredients. If you can afford an organic mattress, it’s the best choice for your health. However, if you can’t afford an organic mattress, you can still protect yourself by using a mattress encasement. A properly designed encasement completely envelops and seals the mattress and box spring, trapping chemicals and bed bugs inside.

When shopping for an organic mattress, make sure it’s GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified. This certification ensures that the entire mattress is made from at least 95% certified organic raw material. Organic latex mattresses are a great option, as they offer the benefits of memory foam without the harmful chemicals. Companies like Beyond Latex are leading the way in organic mattress production and offer a range of organic latex mattresses that are GOLS certified.

It’s essential to choose a safe and healthy mattress for your wellbeing. If you’re not sure whether your mattress is toxic, do some research and find out. Remember that a good night’s sleep is crucial for your health, and it’s worth investing in a mattress that won’t harm you.

How To Do A Chemical Mattress Detox

These chemicals can be removed and purified from the home in a few different ways. Fresh air is your friend when it comes to chemicals that off-gas in your home. You’ll want to have your windows often as often as you can ideally with a cross breeze. This will allow chemicals that off-gas (into the air) to flow out of your home and out of your breathing environment.

You can also get charcoal air purifying bags to put in the corners of your room or directly under your mattress. These are great absorbant packs for the home for absorbing toxins and chemicals from the air, whether from the mattress, couch or paint on the walls. These work great in the bathroom also. You can find these charcoal absorbant packs on amazon for under 20 bucks.

You will want to remember to bring these outside and set them in the sun as the sun purges them of the chemicals they absorb, so do this once every few weeks or so to ensure that they pull new chemicals and toxins in. Air them out! I also keep a few of these in my car to remove any impurities, toxins or funky smells from my car and they work great.

You can also also use onions to purify the air, believe it or not. You can cut up onion slices and leave them on a plate until they dry out.. do this a few times a week and they dry out and suck in any toxic chemicals in the air into the onion. This is a cheap solution but has to be renewed more often.

More important than all of this, do not buy a traditional mattress next time around. I bought a mattress from Ikea once that had so many toxic chemicals in it that it literally gave me headaches, changed the smell of pee and gave me gas. You can read about that story and why I’ll never buy an Ikea mattress again by clicking here.

I recommend getting an organic latex mattress. That’s what I got after I returned my memory foam mattress (full of toxic chemicals) to Ikea, I got an organic latex mattress that has no foul or toxic smell and I sleep like a baby.

I recommend an Essentia mattress. People like Dr. Mark Hyman, Ben Greenfield and Dave Asprey recommend this brand also. You can click here to learn more about organic Latex Mattresses.

Another option is the viscosoft memory foam topper which already has activated charcoal in it, smart move viscosoft! You can find that memory foam topper on amazon by clicking here.
