Here Are The Most Dangerous Types Of Cookware To Avoid:

  1. Non-stick cookware is made of fluoropolymers that have been shown to release perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) when heated. PFOA has been linked to the development of tumors in rats and can accumulate in our bodies because it cannot be metabolized. While the EPA has not yet determined if PFOA is a carcinogen, it is likely detectable in the blood of most people in the developed world. Fortunately, cookware manufacturers have committed to eliminating PFOA from their products by 2015.
  2. Copper is a soft metal that is often paired with nickel. Both metals can release toxins when heated, which can seep into your food. While copper is an essential trace mineral that can benefit our health in moderation, excess copper can be harmful to the body and has been linked to vitamin C deficiency, connective tissue problems, and various cancers associated with high levels of estrogen. Excessive amounts of nickel can lead to the development of thyroid disease, heart disease, and cancer. These two metals can be problematic for our health in excess.
  3. Some ceramic glaze, glass, and enameled cookware may contain lead, which is used to give the cookware strength and uniform color. Children under 6 years of age are particularly susceptible to lead poisoning, and even low amounts of lead can cause damage to brain development and other health problems.   4. Aluminum cookware has long been associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease. While anodized aluminum pots and pans leech less, I choose to avoid aluminum cookware for the safety of my mind and body.
  5. Stainless steel cookware is made of metals including nickel, iron, chromium, titanium, copper, molybdenum, and vanadium. Lesser quality stainless steel cookware, especially when scratched or scored, can leech these alloyed metals into our food. While stainless steel cookware may be slightly better it is still not the best.
  6. Teflon is a type of non-stick coating that is widely used in cookware. It is made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which can release toxic fumes when heated to high temperatures. These fumes can cause flu-like symptoms in humans and can even be lethal to birds. Additionally, when the Teflon coating is scratched or damaged, it can release particles that may contaminate food and potentially cause health issues.
  7. Cast Iron While cast iron cookware is often prized for its durability and versatility, it can also pose health risks if not seasoned and maintained properly. Cast iron is a porous material that can absorb flavors and odors from food, making it difficult to clean and potentially leading to the growth of harmful bacteria. Additionally, excessive iron intake can be harmful to certain individuals, such as those with hemochromatosis.
  8. Plastic cookware, such as microwave-safe containers and utensils, can release harmful chemicals when heated. These chemicals, such as bisphenol A (BPA), can leach into food and potentially disrupt the endocrine system, which can lead to a range of health problems. It is best to avoid cooking with plastic altogether and opt for safer materials such as glass or ceramic.
