What Are You Scrubbing Into Your Scalp? Avoid These Toxic Haircare Chemicals

Spread the love

Most people renew their haircare and beauty care products without thinking twice. I’m out of deodorant, or a facial cleanser. Just pick another one up at the store. The challenge with that is if you don’t know what you’re putting on your armpits, or into your mouth.. or on your scalp, it could be harming your health each time you do it, unbeknownst to you.

It could also be aging you faster. Drying out the skin on your scalp and disrupting the sensitive pH balance of your skin and hair.

One thing that’s important to keep in mind is whatever is in your shampoo and conditioner is going to not only touch your hair, and the skin of your scalp but it’s actually going to absorb into your body. As we use warm water in the shower, our pores are open and we absorb what is put on our body.

The Dangerous Haircare Chemicals To Avoid

Every chemical in a haircare product, be it shampoo or conditioner is going to have its purpose in that formula. One chemical might make your hair shiny, while another chemical causes the shampoo to lather up so that you get that lather up experience while scratching your scalp. You have to keep in mind that haircare product manufacturers are formulating products that give you that lackluster shine, that magical experience we see in television commercials.

Then, exiting the shower and throwing your hair around the entire state of Texas because that’s how much volume and growth was added to your hair by using their product one time in the shower.

That’s the image at least. These products are created for customer experience. To feel good, smell like some sort of fake exotic flower from Mars, and leave you feeling light, airy and chemicalized all day!

The problem here is that many of these chemicals are either carcinogenic (cancer causing) and a lot of the chemicals in haircare products are actually endocrine disruptors. Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that disrupt the hormonal system of the body. For women, this is especially challenging as women’s hormones are harder to get back on track once they’re off as compared to men. Their monthly cycle plays a role in the importance of hormones being on track for them as well.

Grab Your Shampoo & Conditioner And Turn The Label To The Back

In an effort to make this article more of an experiential event as opposed to simply reading an article, why not grab your haircare products, shampoo and conditioner, and any other haircare products. Turn the label to the back where the ingredients are and scan for any of these in the formula you use.

Parabens (propyl-, isopropyl-, butyl-, and isobutyl-)

Parabens are preservatives used in beauty products. These are products that contain any of the following chemical extension names above. These chemicals are harmful to men and women alike. They quite literally have been shown to lower sperm counts and testosterone in men, while causing breast cancer in women! Not only is this carcinogenic, but it’s a known hormonal disruptor as well.

The chemical structure mimics estrogen, a hormone that both men and women have but women have in a higher amount. This confuses the body and estrogen receptors, wreaking hormonal havoc and once again quite literally causing breast cancer. Avoid haircare products with any of the parabens above at all costs. If your haircare product contains these, I’d throw it away immediately.

Synthetic Colors (FD&C or D&C)

Many haircare products contain synthetic colors that are derived from petroleum or tar. Nasty! These synthetic chemicals cause brain health to be affected negatively. Remember, you’re massaging these chemicals into your warm scalp with open pores! These dyes will say have the letters FD&C or D&C followed by red, blue etc. Synthetic colors are said to be a carcinogen (cancer causing) and have also been found to cause ADHD in children. Adults brains are negatively affected by negative colors too, but may be even more dangerous for children as their minds are still young and forming.

Long story short, these synthetic colors actually harm your focus and intelligence, and my be cancer causing.

Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol is a chemical that is used to absorb extra water in a formula so that it doesn’t turn into a soggy mess. It’s understandable, but it does not need to be used in formulas still. There are other options.

Propylene Glycol is a skin irritant and penetrates the pores. Even thought he FDA classifies this as “GRAS” (generally recognized as safe) many people have broken out in hives, and had a host of other negative affects such as central nervous system (CNS) toxicity, hyperosmolarity, hemolysis, cardiac arrhythmia, seizures, agitation, and lactic acidosis.

Dimethyl Phthalate

Dimethyl phthalate is a chemical in the phthalate family, mainly used for haircare products. Watch out for phthlates in other beauty care or cosmetic products as well. They are used in nail polish, as well as others. This chemical has been linked to birth defects in boys and girls. It also increases the risk of breast cancer, and has been shown to cause breast development in younger girls.

Not only can this chemical cause you cancer, but it can also lead to your children having birth defects. That risk is NOT worth taking at all.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Sodium lauryl sulfate can also be called sodium laureth sulfate. These chemicals are found in about 90% of personal care products. Imagine that. This chemical is a known skin, eye and lung irritant. What does that mean? It means that your skin, eyes and lungs do not like this chemical. It means they could react, create a rash or something along those lines.

What’s interesting about SLS (for short) is that when it is combined with other personal care chemicals it can create what are known as nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are known carcinogens, cancer causing chemicals. This chemical is almost an adjunct to other chemicals that when connected (and very commonly are) become cancer forming. This is not good.

There are many haircare products on the market and for the past 15 years or so I thought I was using natural haircare products, but it comes to turn out the products I was using were only partially natural. They still had some chemicals that I later learned I wanted to avoid. This led me on a web search (high and low, believe me) which finally ended up positive!

I found this incredible haircare set (shampoo and conditioner) from a company called Omica Organics. Their shampoo and conditioner are 100% natural and chemical free. In fact, EVERYTHING in their shampoo and conditioner formulas are EDIBLE with the exception of soap nut (which is still natural). You can get Omica’s shampoo and conditioner by clicking here. Use the discount code VFDF7M to get 10% off your entire purchase! I also highly recommend their shower filter, it removes chloride along with other harmful chemicals from the water.

The shower filter will leave your skin and hair feeling softer coming out of the shower, and with the shampoo and conditioner upgrade also, you’ll be on cloud nine! I promise you.
