To delve deeper into this phenomenon, the researchers explored how perceptions of narcissism changed when they swapped eyebrows between faces of narcissists and non-narcissists. They discovered that faces of narcissists were rated as less narcissistic when adorned with non-narcissists’ eyebrows, and vice versa.
From this, they inferred that “distinctive eyebrows disclose narcissists’ personality to others” and significantly influence how narcissism is perceived.
But why do eyebrows play such a role in this? While the researchers did not investigate a specific mechanism, they suggested that eyebrows are crucial in social interactions and nonverbal communication, making us particularly attuned to them. Moreover, eyebrows can reflect a person’s overall appearance and identity.
Given their desire for admiration, narcissists tend to maintain high grooming standards. According to the study’s authors, “Individuals reporting high levels of narcissism tend to wear more fashionable, stylish, and expensive clothing, have a neater, more organized appearance, and appear more attractive.”
Eyebrows also play a significant role in facial recognition and mate selection for both males and females. Meticulously groomed eyebrows can indicate that the owner is aware of this and values their appearance in relation to others.
