It has often been said that children are different than adults.
With their pure hearts and innocence, they remind many of us of angels more than humans, by teaching us about how life should really be lived.
Unfortunately, not all children receive a happy childhood.
For some, their time here is fleeting, and can be filled with immense physical and emotional pain.
The one silver lining is that they sometimes teach us more about life than anyone else ever could, as was the case with one child named Nolan.
“He Was Terrified to Stay Away From His Mother, Even for a Moment”
Young Nolan Scully hated to be away from his mother Ruth, and spent countless hours by her side laying on a comfortable mat that she had bought him.
To outsiders, it was just a mat, but to Ruth, it represented her love for her son.
Nolan was not like other boys, in fact, he constantly battled a dreadful disease called soft-tissue sarcoma that made him stay close to his mother at all times.
Eventually, the boy got his tonsils removed.
The family thought his nightmare was over…But it was just beginning.
A Mother’s Worst Nightmare
Little Nolan was diagnosed with rabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of cancer that invades the soft tissues of the body, and sometimes hollow organs like the bladder or uterus.
Nolan was quickly rushed into months of radiation and chemotherapy.
The treatments worked at first, but Nolan started getting worse not long after.
Doctors pulled Ruth close to tell her the terrible news: her son did not have long to live.
“The Only Way to Get Better is in Heaven”
Ruth knew she had to break the news to her best friend, and it wasn’t going to be easy.
She found Nolan and asked him if he was in pain.
“Yes, Mom,” he said, adding that he would continue fighting for her.
Ruth’s heart broke into a million little pieces.
“Honey, I can’t take your pain anymore,” she said. “The only way to get better is in heaven.”
Nolan responded as only a child can.
“Alright mommy, I’ll go to heaven and play there until you and daddy join me,” he said.
It was then that Ruth and Nolan resigned themselves to the inevitable.
While showering one day, Ruth returned to find Nolan’s oxygen levels had dropped, and he suddenly fell into a coma.
That’s when a miracle happened, as the devices showed sudden signs of
brain activity in the little boy.
He woke up, smiled and said to his mother the four words that would stick with her for the rest of her life.
