The film the passion of the Christ was a blockbuster hit. One of the best grossing films of all time, and for good reason. It depicts the story of Jesus. His life, death and resurrection. It was directed by Mel Gibson, an outspoken Hollywood celebrity who has been in Hollywood for decades. This film divided and shocked audiences worldwide.
It remains the highest rated R grossing films of all time. The film has a lot of strange phenomena associated with it.
According to one study, lighting strikes roughly 240,000 people per year. On the passion of the Christ set, the odds were slightly higher to say the least. In 2003 it happened three times on the set of the passion of Christ alone.
The actor playing Jesus, Jim Caviezel, was struck in the sermon of the mount scene. He shares “what people witnessed was an illumination of my body and a fire on the right and left side of my head.
Quite literally five minutes after he got hit, his assistant came over and said “are you okay” and then he got hit too!
Unbelievably, that wasn’t the first time he was stuck on the set. His umbrella was struck on the set also. Three lightning strikes occurred on the set of the passion of the Christ. Once to the man portraying Jesus, and twice to his assistant.
Another painful incident was when Jesus was being fake beaten, or so that was the plan. The man flogging him didn’t have the best aim and ended up accidentally flogging him. Jim Caviezel, the man playing Jesus shares “His lash just extended over the board and hit me with such a velocity that I couldn’t breathe. I turned around and looked at the guy. I tell you I may be playing Jesus but I felt like Satan in that moment. A couple of expletives came out of my mouth.”
Moments later, Caviezel received another blow on accident. Turns out playing Jesus isn’t the easiest job out there.
Oddly enough, it doesn’t get any better.
Caviezel, the man playing Jesus had his shoulder dislocated carrying the massive cross.
You might think that being flogged a few times with a real whip, being struck by lightning and dislocating your shoulder while carrying a massive cross is just about as bad as it could possibly be. Turns out this was just the tip of the iceberg, and it’s interesting that the suffering that this man endured during his portrayal of Jesus reflected Jesus actually suffering on that cross, isn’t it?
During the Crucifixion Scene
While on the cross there were frigid cold winds which led to him getting a lung infection and pneumonia. He shares “My mouth was shaking uncontrollably, my arms and legs went numb. I was suffocating on that cross.”
The actor had to act with one eye cosmetically sewn shut day in and day out, including night. This led to him having migraine headaches throughout the shoot. He had to head into work at 2 AM everyday in order for the cosmetic team to have enough time to cover him in cosmetic bruises, cuts, lashes and prepare him.
He told Fox News “You’re going to film every day with one eye shut which messes with your depth perception.” This lead to the ongoing migraines throughout the film.
Here’s the craziest part… Caviezel played Jesus in the film and endured a tremendous amount of pain and suffering to portray this image of Jesus at the cross to the world, but since then Hollywood has actually blackballed him, quite literally canceled him simply because he played Jesus in the film.
